14 / 12 - development of ideas and planning for production

This is only a brief reminder re timescale and personal organisation

  1. Remember to plan all three elements synchronously: plan each individually but consider how they link and relate, what tasks and production elements will be needed for each and where is there intertextuality? How will all three borrow interest, relate and work together as a group of promotional materials?
  2. Animators - you need props, scenery and the models completed ready for filming by the end of the holiday at the very very latest
  3. Live action film-makers - you should be filming over the holiday period
  4. Poster design - blogs should include research into the conventions of the three different kinds of poster (Theatrical / Character / Teaser) as well as the conventions, technical and symbolic codes and audiences ( think layout/shape/size/typography/iconography/representation/readability)
  5. Sound - remember the Priest / Se7en extract we analysed last year: how was sound constructing meaning for the audience: what levels of sound will you use: diegetic / non-diegetic / synchronous / asynchronous / contrapunctal/parallel (Parallel sounds are what we expect to hear with that Genre or Images / Contrapunctal sounds are sounds that do not seem to fit the Genre/Image: E.G. in a fight scene one does not expect to hear classical music but it can be used as a juxtaposition to amplify how the audience experiences emotion/reads meaning. / rock music with a fast pace over the scene would be considered Parallel sound.
this week - you need to to move forward significantly covering the elements outlined above - make sure in your tutorial that you check for TFS: Tips for Success and Targets

Research and Planning - understanding and applying Narrative Codes and Theories to my own work

Tuesday 17th November: cover work
P2-part 1 .   please complete a  brief outline of your story. Then you will be generating and refining your ideas for storyline and for plot still further

P2&3 - you will be constructing Narratives and exploring how to add stretch, challenge and sophistication to initial ideas. This will add more complexity to your work. .improve your mark and ensure the best outcome and grade.  Read the second powerpoint below which outlines different narrative theories. . Present 5 different versions of your narratives each fulfilling the 'rules' of one of the different narrative theories. E.g. you could do Propp, Barthes Enigma AND Action code, Todorov  and finally Cameron's episodic structure.  It is okay to present in different methods.  Eg mind map.  Flow diagram.  paragraph..... . FINALLY make a table to show 5 film examples for each of the Narrative theories.
Homework - complete and upload by Thursday this week - catch up all missing work

task 7 researching form, structure. deconstructing codes and using film language

TASK 7 - we will begin looking at FORM & STRUCTURE: CODES AND CONVENTIONS: titles / timings / camera / lighting / layout etc

Choose one film to begin with
Adam/lily / aidan - a shirt film
Emily / harley - a trailer.

1. Deconstruct it in extreme detail capturing screen shots to print and annotate
2. Denite it. ..read the symbolic and visual codes that aid an audience to make meaning.

Time scale.  You have one hour to make notes then be prepared to discuss it

Research / Understanding Crtitical Theory and Planning- Semiotics

Understanding the technical, visual and symbolic codes can help you construct an effective production and your audience make meaning form the text more easily. Visual language is the art of reading visual signifiers and taking meaning from the -  Saussure is responsible for devising this concept: it is easy to understand and manipulate - I expect to see evidence of this on your blogs

A summative slideshare on Semiotics

Daniel Chandlers paper can be found here
http://visual-memory.co.uk/daniel/Documents/S4B/semiotic.html

Task
Generate intial ideas for your main production using
  • mindmap
  • lists
  • post-its
  • storyboards etc
  1. Get some audience feedback
  2. Consider how semiotics will improve your idea

Research - understanding the relationship between Audience, Industry, Codes and Conventions

By the end of today you should have completed task 6:

TASK 6 -  in depth textual analysis of three different outstanding and inspiring examples for each of your intended  productions eg: 3 x short film, 2 x poster, 3 x magazine review ONLY ADAM IS AT THIS POINT SO YOU NEED TO GET A WIGGLE ON EVERYONE ELSE

Today

  1. identify the 9 extracts you will analyse - make sure that they link at some points - e'g a magazine review or poster for the film / trailer that you are analysing
  2. upload the example and embedd it into your blog
  3. analyse in depth - we will begin by mind-mapping what you an write about
  4. watch one of the following clips as a starter - be prepared to discuss it

TASK 7 (NEXT WEEK)- we will begin looking at FORM & STRUCTURE: CODES AND CONVENTIONS: titles / timings / camera / lighting / layout etc - ADAM THIS IS YOUR NEXT MOVE
